5 Tips to Ease Back to School
Tips for a smoother start

I still remember how scary AND exciting (scareciting) a new school year felt!
I loved buying new school supplies, picking my first-day-of-school outfit, and feeling that fresh-start motivation: This is going to be a great year!
Underneath the excitement, there were nerves too- a new teacher, a new classroom, and new expectations.
That’s the thing about starting school: it can be a jarring transition for everyone.
Gone are the flexible schedules, less structured (maybe lazy) days, and later bedtimes of summer. Suddenly, we’re back to early mornings, packed schedules, and the busy rhythm of the school year.
During this shift, you may notice changes in your child’s behavior: separation anxiety, meltdowns, pushback, or just a general sense that things feel harder.
This can happen whether your child is returning to the same school or starting a new one.
Pro Tip: Behavior is how kids communicate.
Transitions come with uncertainty, and uncertainty can be scary.
Rather than waiting for the first day, there are things you can do now to help your child feel more prepared.
- Start talking about school now. Keep it casual and let them share.
2. Read books about starting school. Stories can help children explore their feelings and get familiar with what to expect (find my recommendations here)
3. Adjust bedtimes and wake-up times in advance. Gradually shifting back toward a school schedule can make the first mornings feel a little easier.
4. Do less during the first week. Allow for decompression and downtime
5. Connect, connect, connect! Your child may need more of you during a big transition, and connection will help them as they adjust.
Here's to new beginnings!
